Supporting Children to Make Smart, Safe Choices Online

This week, many of the schools within our trust will be marking Safer Internet Day 2026, a global event celebrated in more than 170 countries. The day brings together families, schools, organisations and communities to help make the online world a safer and more positive place for young people.

This year’s theme, “Smart tech, safe choices,” focuses on the rapidly growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in children’s daily lives. From smart devices to online platforms, AI is increasingly shaping the content children see and interact with. Although AI may appear to “think” independently, its decisions are based on patterns in the data it has been trained on.

As AI becomes more embedded in technology, it’s more important than ever that young people learn how to use these tools confidently and responsibly. Safer Internet Day gives us the chance to:

  • Reinforce key online safety messages
  • Encourage thoughtful, age‑appropriate conversations about AI
  • Build children’s critical thinking and decision‑making skills
  • Promote safe, positive and balanced use of digital technology

In the UK, thousands of schools and organisations will be taking part, helping to raise awareness and start meaningful discussions across the country.

Most importantly, we want to remind families that online safety is a shared responsibility. If something online worries your child—or you—please reach out to us. We are here to listen, support and help find the best next steps.

Together, we can help children navigate the digital world with confidence.
